I have never been more exhausted hearing about the actions of other people than I am this year. In a year filled with pain and pandemics, all of us have been guilty of wanting distractions. Social media has been there to provide us with the meaningless coming and goings of the world’s exalted few.

But now I think more than ever we are seeing the other side of celebrity that leaves us feeling unfulfilled and no longer in awe. The prestige is gone and few of us can unsee it. In short, many people are seeing now how foolish it is to look at people with money to be your spokesperson or to share your same outlook because of their art.

It’s weird though just how quickly one falls out of love for another. One minute this person is your life coach, your sage, and role model and the next they are lost and irredeemable. In the blink of a post, people go from being fixed fixtures in our community to pariahs that have no hope. But why?

A lot of other cultures have weighed on in what we call cancel culture, but I don’t care about their views on the matter especially when they set the conditions for celebrity. In my community, being cancelled weighs more when you’re viewed as the few and…
