There’s a saying that suggests that wise people learn from the experiences and mistakes of others. But the truly adept people in this world, the ones who we admire and idolize, have a healthy blend of both wisdom and experience. Ed Latimore, a former professional heavyweight boxer and accomplished writer, is an example of the latter. Ever since he chronicled his life’s experiences online in 2012, his life has been a steady blend of difficulties, all of which have enriched his life and the lives of others. Ten years after his first post, Ed remains someone still eager to get more.

Born on February 15, 1985, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Ed’s story resembles that of some of his peers: He was raised in public housing by his mother who worked tirelessly to provide for him by herself. He was exposed to a healthy dose of violence and unstable conditions that could have easily affected his life’s path.

But when you ask Ed about it, he’s more composed and matter of fact about it all, chalking it up to overall ignorance on his part and by the surrounding people. “What I remember is you don’t realize how messed up things are until you go somewhere else and you realize it isn’t normal, “says Ed.

Growing up in chaotic settings forged an internal stillness in Ed, who learned to fortify his emotions. That emotional strength served as his foundation, but it would take time for him to learn how to channel it into success. When asked why it was tough for him and others to make it out of impoverished situations, Ed offers a simple but lasting explanation:

“If you want to get people out of their situations, you have to change how they think and it’s very difficult to do that. As a kid, I didn’t know what mattered.”
