The following comes from the 2008 album The Death of Adam by producer and rapper 88 Keys. Frustrated by the uneven exchange of feelings, he tells his would be mate that he will only be her BFF if he’s her best fucking friend. Crude, it has remained in my personal memory bank since, governing my life with the same reverence as the golden rule. It has been my North Star, my creed for dating when I searched in vain for a thing to encompass my feelings. I listened to this album again this weekend and went down memory lane. It had me reflect on a woman I desired in college. She and I’s relationship is about as tangled as, but it serves as a good case study. My rejection is your entertainment.

I haven’t been friend zoned lately. No, I’m comfortable being on a team. It makes me reflect however on how humbling and hard it was when things weren’t so. A fading memory, I last felt its blast a year ago when I attempted to court a woman I liked. I liked her since college, but she evaded my attempts quite nimbly. I’ll…
